Having access to your medical files and data is a fundamental right. It can also be very useful.

When my mom was gravely ill, I made sure to get copies of most test results, etc. as they became available. This proved priceless when we needed to make an emergency change in doctors. The new doctor got a full copy of her file right away, while the hospital bureaucracy wanted to take their sweet time to duplicate her file.
