Good question! As far as I know (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) nobody knows how genetics influences tongue-curling, period. It's just thought that the trait is inherited to a degree that can't be explained by children being taught to curl their tongues by their parents. So there appears to be a genetic component (though some studies have challenged that claim).

What would be the reason for a person to only be able to curl one side of their tongue? How is this explained genetically?

For another trait to study, how about retention of "baby teeth" into adulthood? That's a trait I inherited from my mother and passed on to my son, so it seems to be an autosomal dominant mutation in our family. I'm 66 and still have two of the original four. I don't see any obvious entries at OMIM, though.
